Description
1880 The Royal MintA strong photograph of the Royal Mint building around 1880. The architect was John James Clark who also designed the Treasury Building, the City Baths building and the Customs House, amongst other major works in Melbourne. The building was completed in 1872 and the first Melbourne sovereign was minted on the 8th of July that year. The Melbourne Mint was part of the British Royal Mint and was created to handle the massive gold production in Australia
but beyond that we see a wooden Sandridge Railway Bridge crossing the Yarra

to its left are the premises of the "Bendigo Independent"
The clocktower of the Melbourne Town Hall (Prince Alfred's Tower) is also visible

Opened in 1865 on the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets
the first bridge that was given the name "Princes Bridge" was the stone single-arch bridge
There is a landing or jetty visible and this was used by the two ferry services that carried passengers and goods across the river
The photograph reveals the gentle rise from central Melbourne up to Eastern Hill on the right
This is a digitally retouched reproduction of the original held by the University of Aberdeen
and Collins and his party relocated to Van Diemen's Land where they established Hobart Town in February 1804
