Born in Germany, he immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1772 on board the ship, Minerva. As an indentured servant he arrived in what is today Perry County. Joining the army in Cumberland County, PA, Philip was a Fifer in the American Revolution. After his service, he married Elizabeth Statler Stotler (1775 1849) and had 12 children.
